There was one at Adelaide and southdale by the fish and game pond too. Not sure if it's still there.

Hey mayor Joe, don't you think we should have them back?!

I remember hearing them sometimes as a kid as well...they were always very eerie souding. One time they went off unexpectedly due to a lightning strike (I think it was in '86 or '87)...i was in grade school out during recess and the teachers called us all in and made us get under our desks. LOL, they were 60's children groomed to fear the "Bomb" I guess.

Anyways, I emailed my city councillor and asked...hopefully I'll get a solid response and post back.

Got a reply:

Good afternoon Peter;

On behalf of Councillor Sandy White, Dave Colvin - a manager in the City’s Emergency Management division - was consulted. I’ve copied his response here for you:

"The air raid sirens, owned and operated by the Department of National Defence, were removed in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s.
Warning sirens are not utilized very widely except in tornado prone areas of the US, areas of high risk from chemical or nuclear emergencies.
I hope that provides you with the information you need."
