City By-Laws: Parking a Boat in driveway

Postby SWL » Mon Apr 14, 2014 7:48 am

Good morning all!

I was searching the city of London's by-law PDFs and trying to find info on what is acceptable to park in your driveway. I was told by someone (not actually a London resident) that you can't park boats, RVs or Trailers in your driveway anymore. Is this true? If so where is the supporting documents?? That seems absurd to me, but... it is London after all!

I have a 25' sailboat that looks pretty menacing when its on a trailer that's why I'm asking. ~o)

I didn't find anything specific saying you can't. But did find some by-laws that might be relevant.
Property Standards By-law CP-16 paragraph 3.1.2 (f)

and S-3 Unauthorized Area Parking By-law

Only unlicensed motor vehicles and trailers are banned. There is also a ban on parking motor vehicles in the front or side yard (other than on driveway), but NOT trailers, tractors, farm equipment, etc.

Unauthorized Parking Bylaw

“Motor Vehicle” includes an automobile, motorcycle, motor assisted bicycle unless
otherwise indicated in the Highway Traffic Act, and any other vehicle propelled or driven
otherwise than by muscular power, but does not include a street car, or other motor
vehicles running only upon rails, or a motorized snow vehicle, traction engine, farm
tractor, self-propelled implement of husbandry or road-building machine within the
meaning of the Highway Traffic Act;

“Unauthorized Area” means:
(a) a Front Yard or Side Yard, except as otherwise permitted under the City’s
Zoning By-law; or
(b) the Boulevard, except where parking, standing or stopping is permitted by a
City of London by-law;
2.1 No person shall park, stand or stop a motor vehicle in an Unauthorized Area.

Property Standards Bylaw

Without restricting the generality of subsection 3.1.1, maintained in a neat and tidy condition
includes removal of:
...
(f) wrecked, dismantled, inoperative, discarded, unused, or unlicensed vehicles or
trailers, except in an establishment licensed or authorized to conduct or operate
a wrecking business;

When we bought our house new we had to sign an agreement that we wouldn't have boats or trailers in our laneway and that we weren't allowed to put clotheslines up in the backyard. This was more or less a voluntary agreed-upon action for our subdivision.

Agreements not to have clotheslines are null and void according to Ontario law. As are bans on pets, including in rentals.
