One of the first things I heard as a Boy Scout. Just common sense.
So why is it that not even 1% of us have prepared for 72 hour emergencies? Fewer than one in a thousand Canadians have made plans and preparations for a longer scenario.
In the 1998 Ice storm 700,000 people were without hydro for over three weeks. 97% of those affected did not make it to shelters - 28 people died, most by freezing.
So - what does it take to motivate us to think ahead? Your new furnace won't work without hydro. If you try to get to a shelter your pipes and toilets will freeze causing a huge amount of damage.
We all know these things!
