Internet cost

Though we already pay more than most people in the world, providers now want to charge "by-the-bit". Why this change?

This has been a taboo topic in Canadian news, but a fundamental change took place a few months ago. I have not seen a single reference in the news.

Most TV stations have web sites which allow you to watch (commercials and all) most shows anytime - some offer streaming of broadcasts. The quality has always been low - delays, low resolution. This is a problem which the internet has always had.

Afew months ago it all changed. CITY TV (owned by Rogers) suddenly and without fanfare began to provide high quality real time video. I sent an email asking what had changed. No reply.

Obviously, new software is making this possible. Now, other stations are offering this higher quality video service. When this becomes widely known many people will decide that paying huge cable or dish bills is stupid when the same shows are available on the internet.

With the end of cable staring them in the face, Rogers and others are now fighting to make us pay for TV even on the internet. With "by-the-bit" billing you will pay for every show you watch.

Tell someone! Talk about it! Call your MP! Our government should protect our interests.
